Exploring Nature's Colors: Dye Workshop

As Spring approaches, imagine the vibrant colors of Maine-grown plants beautifying your fibers, fabric and clothing. Jude Hsiang, an expert in natural dyeing, will lead this engaging, fact-packed, hands-on workshop. Every participant will dye or tie-dye a cotton bandana or silk scarf.

About the event
Using Maine-grown plant material from Jude’s dye garden, participants can choose to dye or tie-dye a cotton bandana or silk scarf. There will be dyed items and related material from her many years as a natural dyer. Novices as well as experienced dyers are invited to learn and share their knowledge. Note-taking is encouraged!
Jude Hsiang has been exploring the art of natural dyeing for 5 decades and teaching for 20 years. She grows and forages dyeplants at her South China home, and uses traditional tropical dyestuffs as well. She is particularly interested in dyeing Maine grown and processed fibers with Maine plant materials.
With minimal preparation and equipment, Jude will teach you how to produce fibers, yarns and fabrics in vibrant, lasting colors. She will discuss plant materials that really work and warn about those that are not true dyes. Jude will bring samples of her explorations in natural…
